Good Art Makes You Think

About my process

I use only primary colors: red, yellow, blue, black, and white. I spatter them over the canvas attempting evenness (which in itself is a balance of trying to exert control over a chaotic gesture). The paint must fall through a grid of wooden squares, some of which are removed using random numbers (generated courtesy www.random.org).

So when I spatter blue, for instance, open squares turn blue. All the squares are then replaced, another series of numbers generated, and another set of squares removed. Red gets spattered, and some squares then turn red, others stay blue, and some become purple. And then the same for the other colors.

Depending on my plan for the work, I’ll manipulate the math or the pattern, but only do what the numbers tell me to do. So, I’m tightly controlling something which I have no control over. I’m intentionally executing something that’s making itself. The photo shows “God’s Appointment Book for 3.25.09″ in process.
